YRF dropped a teaser of the Shamshera movie today. Shamshera movie is all set to be released on 22nd July 2022. The project of the Shamshera movie was 4 years in the making till the date of its release as has reportedly been made on a budget on a budget of close to 150 crores.
With historical movies taking a grip and more and more filmmakers trying to get their hands on this angle, Shamshera is no different. Let’s take a look at whether Shamshera movie is based on a true story or is it a fictional historical movie.
Shamshera Based on a True Story?
By looking at the teaser, Shamshera’s visuals and storyline resembled that of Thugs of Hindostan. Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera is indeed based on a true story. In Ranbir Kapoor’s own words, Shamshera movie is set in the 1800s, based on a dacoit tribe who are fighting for their rights and independence from the British. In an interview from 2018, speaking on the Shamshera movie, Ranbir Kapoor said,
“Shamshera is not a story of a ‘daaku’, but a film based in the 1800s, it is about a dacoit tribe who are fighting for their right and independence from the British. There was a great story of heroism, a story rooted in our country which actually happened back then. It is a departure from the kind of films I have done, it is not the coming-of-age lover boy roles that I have done often. Shamshera is in the aspirational space, the space of the true commercial cinema.”
So on the whole, Shamshera is indeed based on a true story. The plot has been taken from the real-life incidences based on the atrocities which tribesmen faced and revolted against the British. It should also be seen that for now, the hype is such that Shamshera is indeed based on a true story. However, the accuracy, real timeline, and other facts and figures supporting the historical evidence will only be known once the movie is released on the big screen.
Will Shamshera Release on OTT?
Shamshera is made for the big screen. It will only be released in theatres. After 1.5-2 months of release, the movie will eventually come out on OTT. But Shamshera as a movie is not meant specifically for OTT release.

Shamshera will also mark the return of Ranbir Kapoor on the big screen after 4 years. He was last seen in 2018 released Sanju.
