The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5 will continue in 2024, but only one of its forthcoming properties is not a spin-off. Amidst a variety of shakeups and delays, 2024’s slate of MCU Phase 5 properties will include several TV shows and one highly anticipated movie, continuing the MCU’s Multiverse Saga as it builds towards its finale, which will likely be altered significantly following the firing of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. 2024’s MCU properties will, fittingly, take place across various realities, with most tying into the main MCU timeline.
2024 was initially set to include Captain America: Brave New World – a film that continues the saga of Sam Wilson as the new Captain America following the Avengers: Endgame ending and The Falcon and the Winter Solider – which would itself lead into Marvel’s Thunderbolts. With both films delayed, the only MCU movie releasing in 2024 is Deadpool 3, a film that will bridge the MCU to the Fox X-Men universe and potentially many other familiar realities. As for the rest of 2024’s MCU releases, they will be spin off TV shows based on previous MCU properties.
Deadpool 3 Is The Only MCU Release Of 2024 That Isn't A Spin-Off
The MCU will begin its 2024 slate with Echo, a series centered on Maya Lopez, who was introduced in 2021’s Hawkeye. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries will see the return of Agatha Harness, the antagonist and breakout character of WandaVision. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man – fascinatingly – is an animated series based on Spider-Man: Homecoming, featuring an alternate version of the MCU in which Peter Parker is mentored by Norman Osborn instead of Tony Stark. The upcoming Eyes Of Wakanda animated series will further explore the history of Wakanda established in Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Marvel Zombies will be based on an episode of Marvel’s What If…? season 1.
Deadpool 3, however, will not be a spinoff of a previous MCU property. The film will likely have massive ramifications for the main MCU timeline, bringing not only Deadpool into the MCU but also potentially many other X-Men characters. The X-Men’s introduction to the MCU is inevitable, but with the Fox X-Men universe being bridged to the MCU, it is now possible that the MCU’s mutants (other than Wade Wilson) may come from multiple realities.
X-Men '97 Is A Sequel (But It's Not In The MCU)
One highly anticipated Marvel property due to be released in 2024 is X-Men ’97, which, notably, is not a spinoff but rather a sequel to the beloved X-Men Animated Series. X-Men ’97, despite being produced by Marvel Studios Animation, is not set in the MCU, though considering the multiversal premise of Marvel’s current properties, it is safe to assume that its reality may be referenced in future MCU properties. As it stands, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ms. Marvel each reference the original X-Men Animated Series.

In The Lord of the Rings, Middle-earth is no stranger to enormous creatures. From the Balrog of Moria to Shelob in Mordor, Tokien's world is filled with oversized monstrosities that terrorize those unfortunate enough to cross their paths. One such creature was the dragon Smaug, who claimed Erebor and all of its gold from the Dwarves with relative ease. Despite Smaug's gargantuan size, the dragon was nowhere near the largest creature ever to roam Middle-earth, as another member of his species takes that trophy by a landslide.
The Hobbit never provides a specific size for Smaug. However, from J.R.R. Tolkien's drawings and notes, it's assumed the dragon's depiction in the Peter Jackson trilogy is pretty accurate. Smaug was able to fit in the door to Erebor but was also large enough to destroy most of Lake-town when he fell from being shot by Bard the Bowman. Being one of the few dragons left in Middle-earth, it's fair to assume Smaug was the biggest dragon to roam the world during Bilbo's lifetime, and his propensity for self-aggrandizement meant that he would eagerly play that up, as he did to Bilbo when the Hobbit intruded upon his horde. However, through the history of Middle-earth compiled in The Silmarillion, it's clear that Smaug would have appeared little more than a rodent in comparison to Ancalagon the Black: a much older dragon big enough to conceivably have destroyed the world itself.
Updated on December 22, 2023, by Robert Vaux: Tolkien's Lord of the Rings isn't limited to the titular trilogy — on the contrary, the fictional universe of Middle-earth is extremely vast and culturally diverse. Countless events have transpired over the course of history, splitting the timeline into the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Ages. Although most of the dragons appeared during the First Age, these malevolent creatures remained part of the internal discourse for thousands of years after, along with similar creatures like giant spiders. Dragons come in a wide range of shapes and sizes; some of the earlier ones were even wingless worms. All things considered, however, only one Lord of the Rings dragon deserves the distinction of being the greatest.
Morgoth Created Dragons
Middle-earth's Most Infamous Fire Drakes
Ancalagon
Glaurung
Smaug
During the First Age of Middle-earth, the Dark Lord Morgoth spread terror across the land as he attempted to rule all of Middle-earth. Tolkien used him as a part of what amounted to a creation story for his imaginary world, echoing cultural myth such as the Christian fall of paradise and the Greek tales of Cronos and Rhea. While having the same goals and ambitions as Sauron, Morgoth was far more powerful and an even greater threat to the world. During Morgoth's reign, he bred a series of vile creatures and entities, the strongest of which were the dragons. The first dragon created by Morgoth was known as Glaurung, a wingless worm capable of hypnotizing both Men and Elves. He plays a critical role during the First Age, particularly in Túrin Turambar's tragic hero's journey.
The dragons that followed Glaurung possessed the ability to fly. Although there are only four named dragons in the story, all of them are capable of breathing a fire so hot that it could have melted all the Rings of Power — except the One Ring. Thankfully, Smaug was killed long before the events in The Lord of the Rings, while he might not have joined forces with Sauron, he was certainly not friend of the people of Middle-Earth, and his occupation of the Lonely Mountain would have kept a powerful stronghold out of their hands: making Frodo and Sam's journey almost impossible. (Gandalf's involvement in the events of The Hobbit is intended partially to correct this state of affairs: returning the dwarves to their ancestral home and providing a ready hard point to resist the armies of Mordoer.) However, despite Smaug's incomparable strength, intelligence, and cunning, he couldn't hold a candle to the biggest dragon in Lord of the Rings.
That title belongs to Ancalagon the Black, a truly massive dragon bred by Morgoth in the deepest pits of Angband. His name can be loosely translated to mean "biting storm," a fitting epithet for such a monster. Nobody knows anything about this creature's origins — some fans posit that Ancalagon could have been a transfigured Maia, whereas others suggest that he was birthed from the filth of the world itself. Whatever the case may be, there's no doubt that Ancalagon was Morgoth's most fearsome and formidable weapon. According to Gandalf, however, "not even Ancalagon the Black... could have harmed the One Ring, the Ruling Ring, for that was made by Sauron himself." As such, there are clear limitations to the dragon's powers.
Ancalagon Would Have Towered Over Smaug
Morgoth Created Ancalagon During the First Age
Ancalagon's precise height is never given. Still, he is described to be "as tall as a mountain" and could block out the sky as he flew overhead. So, the Men and Elves didn't stand a chance as the dragon destroyed their lands and laid ruin to their armies. Ancalagon the Black made his first appearance during the War of Wrath, a series of battles that would mark the end of Morgoth's malevolent reign over Middle-earth. When the Valar's armies overwhelmed the Dark Lord's multitudes, he decided to play his final move: the release of the dragons from Angband. Led by Ancalagon, the dragons wreaked havoc upon the forces of the Valar. And as is typical for Tolkien's worked, the great Eagles were forced to intervene. Thorondor, the leader of the Eagles and the ancestor of Gwaihir, fought the winged dragons in the sky along with Eärendil's help. The elf-lord arrived "shining with white flame," slayed "Ancalagon the Black, the mightiest of the dragon-host, and cast him from the sky." Ancalagon subsequently "fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim, and they were broken in his ruin." In other words, he was large enough to destroy the three volcanic mountains constructed by Morgoth as well as the surrounding landscape. Thangorodrim was thousands of feet tall at the very least, making Ancalagon exponentially bigger than Smaug.
There's precedent for it among Middle-earth's other monsters as well, most notably Shelob: the giant spider who guards the secret passage into Mordor. As terrifying as she is, she's simply a smaller version of her ancestor Ungoliant who forged an alliance with Morgoth and poisoned the two Trees of Valinor at his behest, only for Morgoth to betray her. His Balrogs drove her off and she remained hidden for the rest of her days. Like Ancalagon, she was much larger than her kin in the Third Age, and like Ancalagon, her battles resulted in truly cataclysmic changes to the landscape. (Morgoth's scream at her assault on him continues to echo in the lands of Lammoth in the north of Middle-earth.) Ancalagon is of a kind with her, and similarly reflects Tolkien's vision of primal powers in the early days of Middle-earth that shaped the conflicts and geography that came later.
Smaug's lifeless body was just the right size to obliterate the town of Esgaroth, so he wasn't exactly a small beast. But he was small enough to fit under the Lonely Mountain atop his horde of treasure for many years, and for all his terrifying power, Bard the Bowman slew him with just a single arrow (though admittedly it was aimed at his one weak spot in a quiet nod to the Greek myth of Achilles). Meanwhile, Ancalagon's fall managed to terraform an enormous chunk of land, presumably changing the geography of the area forever.
All these details make the First Age sound like a terrible time to be alive, which was very much the point. Figures like Ancalagon and Ungoliant are akin to the Titans of Greek mythology and similar godlike beings whose clashes shape the worlds later occupied by heroes and villains. Luckily, however, the monstrosities of Middle-earth faded over time. And, with the defeat of Sauron and the Age of Men beginning, the giants of the world would seemingly disappear altogether. That said, fans still remember Gandalf's ominous words — "Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he." There might well be an ancient monster that dwarfs even Ancalagon the Black, who serve no side but their own and could destroy entire kingdoms if roused.
Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder delves into how he nearly went to a galaxy far, far away as he reveals the main reason he pitched an edgier R-rated Star Wars movie.
Speaking with The Atlantic, Snyder explained why he originally pitched Rebel Moon as an R-rated Star Wars movie to Lucasfilm in 2012, before Disney acquired the production company. According to Snyder, he believed the Star Wars fanbase had "grown up" enough to want to see it move in a different direction. However, when Disney made the acquisition, he felt the mass media giant had little intention of making his film down the line. "The Star Wars audience, they've grown up," Snyder said. "They're adults now. And it would be cool to make movies for them... When the acquisition happened, there were discussions of, like, 'Oh, maybe we'll make your movie, like down the liiiiiiiine,'" he said. "And I was like, 'Okay, whatever.'"
After Snyder's pitch was rebuffed, the director conceptualized the Rebel Moon franchise, which includes the film duology he's currently promoting, as well as a planned video game and a comic book series, among other properties. Both Rebel Moon movies, A Child of Fire and The Scargiver, were set in their own continuity. Netflix vice president Ori Marmur revealed the reason why Snyder's Rebel Moon was split into two movies, telling Variety, "When we saw how big the world he created was, we thought it would be better served as two pieces versus one film. It’s the kind of story that can continue to grow."
Starring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher and Anthony Hopkins, A Child of Fire made its limited theatrical debut on Dec. 15 ahead of its Netflix debut shortly thereafter. However, the results so far have been disappointing for Snyder, with the film attracting a 23% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audience score of 73% suggests there is fan interest in his franchise. Most of the criticism surrounding A Child of Fire stems from its focus on world-building over storytelling, while some have questioned the depth of the characters involved.
Rebel Moon uses a cliffhanger ending to set up The Scargiver, which is set for an Apr. 19, 2024 release. Along with the versions people have seen in cinemas and will get to stream on Netflix, Snyder has promised a "very hard" R-rated director's cut of A Child of Fire to further stoke audience interest.
A Child of Fire is now available for streaming via Netflix.
According to a new insider report by Jeff Sneider (TheInSneider) dated Dec. 20, Avengers: Secret Wars' runtime is a massive five hours, so long that the reported plan is to split the story across two movies. This strengthens Marvel rumors from earlier this year, with the source now describing it as a "a giant five-hour movie with a year-long intermission." This suggests that its current slated date of May 7, 2027, will be quickly followed by Avengers: Secret Wars (Part 2) in 2028. They would also quickly follow Avengers 5, which may no longer be called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is slated for a May 1, 2026 release. As of now, this is just a rumor, and nothing has been confirmed officially by Marvel Studios, but it's creating a lot of fan discussion online.

With Avengers: Secret Wars now estimated to be around 2.5 hours per film, this cuts rather close to the long Avengers: Endgame, giving ample time to fulfill the rumors of the MCU reboot sparked by comments surrounding Marvel boss, Kevin Feige. "Feige had to learn different lessons from the comics," a passage from MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios reads. "How superheroes periodically needed to be rebooted, how to stop variants and spinoffs from spiraling out of control, how an annual mega-crossover event could unify a disparate line of characters."
Jonathan Majors' MCU Firing Might Further Affect the Avengers Sequels
Avengers: Secret Wars' 2027 release date is only tentative, with prior industry conditions already resulting in its pushback from 2026. One of the biggest factors currently affecting Secret Wars is the recasting of Jonathan Majors, who played the important MCU antagonist Kang the Conqueror. Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment on Dec. 18, 2023, before being summarily fired by Marvel. While John Boyega is a popular fancast, the actor latest comments didn't leave much room for optimism. TheInSneider also debunked any suggestions that Will Smith was in line for the role, calling them "Utter nonsense" in a recent X post. The Marvels' star Iman Vellani has also shared her theory on Kang's role in Secret Wars, providing a possible way that Majors could be seamlessly written out of the story.
As fans await more information on the plot of Secret Wars, a CBR feature argues The Marvels' post-credit scene seemingly confirms a major crossover between the two biggest superhero teams. Loki writer Michael Waldron will write both Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
Mark Wahlberg has some good news for Uncharted fans.
Wahlberg starred alongside Tom Holland (Nathan Drake) as Victor Sullivan, also known as Sully. The two are as thick as thieves - most times - both originally coming from the incredibly successful and beloved Uncharted gaming franchise from PlayStation.
While a proper sequel to the 2022 movie hasn't been confirmed, producer Charles Roven did say this past summer that the studio was "definitely looking to make another" film in the franchise, which isn't a surprise considering how Uncharted grossed $400 million worldwide on a reported $120 million budget.
Uncharted 2 Script Now Written
In an exclusive interview with The Direct while promoting his upcoming film, The Family Plan, Mark Wahlberg confirmed that a sequel to Uncharted is in development and that a script has now been written.
When asked about the prospective sequel, Wahlberg shared that he's aware of different directions for its story before stating that Sully's mustache, which he donned in the first movie's post-credits scene, would make a comeback in the next film:
"I've heard lots of different ideas. I know somebody's written a script, and they're still working on it, and it would consist of having the mustache the whole entire time. Which completely makes sense; obviously, in that final scene, I have the mustache."
Wahlberg admitted that he spent some time growing out the facial hair during the 2020 production:
"I spent quite a bit of time growing it because, at one point, we tried to do it with a fake mustache, and, I don't know. I just don't have the confidence to pull it off. It just feels like there's a big piece of tape over my mouth, and I feel ridiculous. I admire actors who can wear wigs and prosthetics and makeup and all that stuff. I've successfully worn one prosthetic, but that was long ago..."
He concluded that "if we can make [the sequel] better than the first" movie (which earned a 40% critic approval score and Rotten Tomatoes), then he's "open" to committing to a return:
"When I finally got the mustache, people really appreciated it. And it was a nice tag to the end of that film. So if we can make it better than the first, you know, I'd be open to it, but I only know as much as you do right now."
Uncharted's script was written by Rafe Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway; it's unclear if any of them are involved with the developing sequel.
What Could an Uncharted 2 Look Like?
With a script written for Uncharted 2, fans hoping for another film should feel pretty hopeful. But what exactly would another installment look like?
Well, the post-credits tags hint at two major directions the story could take Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg's heroes.
For one, there's the person Holland's Nathan Drake was meeting: Gage, a man representing Roman. That name is familiar to many who played the original games because he was the main villain of the first Uncharted game—which sees the crew searching for the fabled El Dorado.
There's also the tease of Nathan's brother Sam being alive and well (relatively speaking) in some faraway prison. Interestingly enough, this story point doesn't actually pop up in the games until the fourth installment.
Whatever Sony Pictures chooses to do next, odds are it'll be a unique blend of both classic and original ideas.
Four years later, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is finally paying off a major Hollow Earth reveal from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The first full trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire reveals quite a lot about awaits the two pop culture icons when they make their next big-screen Monsterverse appearances. As the footage makes clear, the Hollow Earth world will be central to the story for both of the titular Titans.
It's no surprise, of course, that the Hollow Earth will be paramount to what's ahead for the Monsterverse. Over the years, Godzilla and Kong's cinematic universe has gradually increased its importance to the lore. Legendary laid out the general concept in Kong: Skull Island, worked it into the wider world of the Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and allowed for a glimpse into this hidden corner of the Monsterverse in Godzilla vs. Kong. It only made sense that the next step would be for the sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, to dive deep into the Hollow Earth, showing off the denizens of this world and explaining some of its most pressing mysteries.
Godzilla X Kong Confirms Humans Still Live In The Hollow Earth
One of the areas Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is gearing up to explore seemingly pertains to a key reveal from 2019's King of the Monsters. After following Godzilla into his underwater lair, Monarch came to the startling realization that thousands of years ago, humans dwelled within the Hollow Earth tunnels and worshipped the Titans as gods. The idea of humans occupying a place inside the Hollow Earth was a fascinating discovery to say the least; however, it's not one that Godzilla vs Kong followed up on when it took the characters down into that once-unseen world. Godzilla x Kong, on the other hand, looks to be heading in another direction, as the trailer teases the continued existence of Hollow Earth humans.
In the trailer, human characters can be shown brandishing spears and aiming them at the protagonists. What this implies is that when the main characters begin their exploration of the Hollow Earth, they'll come across people who live there and perhaps see them as invaders from the surface. This ties in perfectly with King of the Monsters, the movie that dropped this shocking reveal about the Hollow Earth having humans in the first place. Godzilla x Kong is now taking it to another level by revealing that not only did people live deep underground, but there's still some down there.
Monsterverse Has Already Teased The Identity Of The Hollow Earth Humans
As for who the Hollow Earth humans in Godzilla x Kong really are, it looks like the Monsterverse may already have a working explanation for this. In the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization, it was revealed that the Iwi tribe in Kong: Skull Island were descendants of a human civilization who existed alongside the Kongs in the Hollow Earth. Apparently, their people relocated to Skull Island with the Kongs after the Titan War. Of course, because these details never made it to the screen, they could technically be retconned. But, the connection does make sense nonetheless, given that it's known the Kongs came from the Hollow Earth.
With that in mind, it's certainly plausible that the Iwi tribe originated from the Hollow Earth. That goes hand-in-hand with the decision to bring Jia, a surviving member of the Iwi, back for Godzilla x Kong. If the Hollow Earth humans are indeed related to the Iwi, they'd have a connection to Jia which the main characters can use to their advantage.
Godzilla X Kong's Hollow Earth Humans Can Finally Solve The Monsterverse's Biggest Mysteries
The decision to bring the Hollow Earth humans into the picture in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is massive for the Monsterverse. Their presence there grants the Monsterverse opportunities that weren't available in previous installments. After all, that's only so much audiences can learn about the Monstervere's ancient history from statues, carvings, paintings and skeletons. These provide fun Easter eggs, hints about the past, but only a few concrete answers. If the Monsterverse wants to fully solve its biggest mysteries, one of the easiest ways it can do that is through human characters who already possess this information.
Presumably, they'll speak a different language, but if that barrier can be broken, Godzilla x Kong's cast can make some important breakthroughs. For a while now, there's been a great lack of clarity regarding why the Monsterverse's ancient Titan War happened, why Kong's kind wound up on Skull Island, and why the Kongs had access to Godzilla's power in their temple. Plus, there's the matter of the new mysteries posed by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, such as the history of the Scar King and the nature of Godzilla's new form. If these questions are brought to the Hollow Earth humans, the Monsterverse can use this chance to provide a much-needed history lesson, and in turn set up some new mysteries for future movies to explore.
Kevin Feige has confirmed whether or not Iron Man will be returning in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Robert Downey Jr. originated the MCU version of the character in 2008's Iron Man, the movie that kicked off the franchise which has now expanded to include 33 movies and eight Disney+ shows, with many more on the way. Downey Jr. reprised his role in nine MCU movies before his character's death in 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
Vanity Fair recently ran a cover story on Robert Downey Jr. in which they spoke to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the possibility of a future Iron Man MCU return. Feige said that they are planning to "not touch that moment again." He shared that bringing Iron Man's story to a close took years of hard work, and they do not intend to "magically undo it." Check out his full quote below:
We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.
Iron Man's MCU Legacy Looms Large
Given the fact that the introduction of the multiverse in Phases 4 and 5 of the MCU could potentially allow a version of Iron Man to return to the franchise, Feige's determination may seem surprising. However, Iron Man's death is one of the most important moments in the overarching story of the franchise. In addition to allowing Robert Downey Jr. to exit the MCU after more than a decade playing the same character and go on to pursue other projects like Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, the legacy of the Iron Man character still defines the path of the MCU moving forward.
This has already been the case, as coping with the loss of his mentor Iron Man was at the center of the two most recent adventures of Tom Holland's Spider-Man. While it is currently unclear if that particular character will be returning to the MCU, Iron Man has already inspired another hero who is set to make a splash in the franchise. That would be the armored young inventor Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), also known as Ironheart, who debuted in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and is set to return in the upcoming Disney+ show Ironheart.
Iron Man also has another, less distinctly positive influence on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His Avengers: Endgame decision to return the population that Thanos destroyed without erasing the five years the universe spent without them resulted in a disjointed timeline known as The Blip, which has had tremendous social and political ramifications the universe over. Even if the character never returns, his actions have a tremendous impact and leave behind a legacy just as important and complicated as the character himself.

Farrey Box Office Collection Day 6
Farrey Box Office Collection Day 5
Farrey Box Office Collection Day 3
Farrey Box Office Collection Day 2

Actor Chris Evans says he's just as in the dark as the fans on whether he will return as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After portraying Steve in the Captain America movies, Evans seemingly said farewell to the role in 2019 when the character's story seemed to conclude at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Recently, there have been new rumors of Marvel Studios plotting an Avengers movie that would reunite the original crew, including Evan's Captain America. On Monday, Evans was asked about these rumors of his return while appearing on The View (per TheWrap). He suggests that the rumors are not out of the ordinary and that there's no truth to them, claiming he hasn't even been contacted by Marvel Studios at this point about a potential return.
“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans said about the rumors. “I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, and Hemsworth, and Scarlet [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back! ... [But] no one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”
Will Chris Evans Return to the MCU?
The MCU has seemingly moved on without Evans, as Anthony Mackie takes on the titular mantle for the upcoming sequel Captain America: Brave New World. While a special appearance from Evans' Steve Rogers is possible, it would come as a surprise, as there's no indication that the character will be involved with the film. While Evans has also seemed to move on, he has also kept the door ajar for a possible return, based on previous comments. He told Variety earlier this year that the time for a return "doesn't quite feel right now," but that he wasn't entirely opposed to a comeback, feeling that there was still some story left to explore for his Steve Rogers.
"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply," Evans said, admitting he's worried about tarnishing his run in the role. "He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there's more Steve Rogers stories [to] tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it… it's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well."
As for what's next for Evans, who recently co-starred with Emily Blunt in Netflix's Pain Hustlers, the actor will co-star with Dwayne Johnson and J.K. Simmons in the upcoming Christmas-themed action movie Red One.
Marvel is reportedly eyeing the possibility of Iron Man's return to the MCU, and has already been setting up the conditions for such an event for the last 10 years. Despite being halfway through MCU Phase 5, Iron Man is still a central figure in the MCU, with even The Marvels' final trailer featuring Tony Stark and his collection of suits in the opening shots. The MCU lingering on Tony Stark four years after his death only helps to cement the notion that it isn't through with him yet. Short of being a cause for concern, however, this may not be a bad thing given that Tony Stark has some unfinished business in the MCU.
Tony Stark was the hero who kicked off the MCU with 2008's Iron Man, with one of the most iconic comic book movie arcs in history culminating in his heroic sacrifice. Despite Tony Stark's heroics, however, he left behind a rather problematic legacy that he had briefly rectified in Iron Man 3 before the following 10 years worked to reverse it entirely. That legacy was one he had attempted to combat throughout his life, but unfortunately, one that persisted past his death.
The overarching motif throughout Tony's tenure has focused on the repercussions of his manifested ideas either falling into the wrong hands, being replicated by the wrong hands, or, as was the case with Ultron, being the wrong hands. Iron Man saw his first-ever suit of armor being commandeered by nefarious actors. Iron Man 2 saw his technology being suboptimally replicated by less competent figures, to dangerous effect. Iron Man 3, meanwhile, culminated in Tony Stark triggering the "Clean Slate Protocol," amounting to the destruction of his suits, which at least went some way to keeping them out of the reach of less worthy characters.
Soon after the shocking conclusion to Iron Man 3, however, Tony Stark resumed building tech that would continue to be misappropriated. Among the most cataclysmic was Ultron, who was intended to be an AI protector of Earth before it turned genocidal. Even Thanos nearly utilized Stark's nanotech gauntlet to commit the Snap once again. Following his death, Stark's tech has continued to be misappropriated, with E.D.I.T.H. and its access to Stark's drones falling into the possession of Mysterio before E.D.I.T.H. was most recently seen being used by Damage Control to hunt down super-powered individuals.
Vision, meanwhile, has been "revived" by S.W.O.R.D. to become White Vision, initially presented as a dangerous mindless husk of his former self whose destructive potential is now unchecked. Then, from what is known of Armor Wars, Tony Stark's armor is doomed to fall into the wrong hands without him around to prevent it to catastrophic effect. All of this combined practically leaves Stark's MCU legacy in tatters.
Iron Man Should Return To Reclaim His Own MCU Story
Evidently, Stark's legacy requires some TLC to circumvent the possibility that his tech has caused more harm than good. The events of Iron Man 3, in which he wiped the slate clean by destroying the Iron Legion, seem like a drastic but necessary route towards this. Only by removing his tech from the equation can Stark and the Avengers be certain his work will not be misused by unscrupulous characters who fail to approach it with the correct level of competence and nuance that only a handful of Stark tech-wielding characters can embody.
If this is the route that the MCU takes, then it must be Stark himself who pushes the "self-destruct" button. A huge part of his character arc was the recognition of his technology's destructive potential, and how dangerous it is in the wrong hands. By replicating the events of Iron Man 3 and ensuring that he seizes control of his own destiny, Tony Stark's story can reach a second satisfying conclusion following his apparent death in Avengers: Endgame. This does, however, necessitate his return to the MCU.
Will Iron Man Really Return To The MCU?
It already seems apparent that the MCU is gearing towards some kind of Tony Stark reprisal. Iron Man is so central to the MCU's identity that it seems almost remiss to not revisit the character in some capacity, particularly with his legacy being so starkly threatened by the likes of Armor Wars and whatever Damage Control ends up doing with E.D.I.T.H. Whether it will be an Iron Man portrayed by Robert Downey Jr, however, is up for debate.
On one hand, RDJ so perfectly embodied the character of Tony Stark that it would feel wrong to see an Iron Man that isn't him. On the other, his story came to such a satisfying conclusion that bringing him back could seem like a desperate attempt from Marvel to recoup its recent losses by redeploying its biggest star. Whatever the case, the multiverse offers plenty of opportunities to have Iron Man return in a satisfying capacity, if only to have him tie up the final loose end he left behind.
Superman: Legacy director James Gunn sets the record straight on the latest DC Universe reboot about the upcoming movie.
Over the weekend, Gunn shared a new look at one of his walls from his production office, as DC is still in the pre-production stages for Superman: Legacy.
When asked by Owen J. Gordon if "the terrorist threat in the Middle East storyline" rumor was true, Gunn took the opportunity to clarify that the report is inaccurate and that isn't what they are doing with the Superman: Legacy story.
