Now that Extraction 2 is readily available for streaming as of June 16, Netflix is looking to the future of the Chris Hemsworth-led franchise.
According to Variety, Netflix confirmed at Tudum 2023, held on June 17, that Chris Hemsworth will return for Extraction 3. In the series, Hemsworth portrays Tyler Rake, a highly-skilled black ops mercenary. In the first movie, Tyler undertakes a mission to save the son of an Indian crime lord, a task that almost cost him his life. In the latest film, Extraction 2, Tyler recuperates from his previous assignment before choosing to embark on another daring mission, involving rescuing the family of a renowned Georgian gangster Zurab, portrayed by Tornike Gogrichiani. Sam Hargrave returns as director, and the main cast includes Golshifeh Farahani as Nik Khan and Adam Bessa as Yaz Khan. Some exciting casting additions to Extraction 2 include Idris Elba, who portrays the mysterious man who recruits Rake for the new mission and Olga Kurylenko, who is best known as the Bond girl Camille Montes in Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace.
Hargrave, a former stuntman, made his directorial debut with the first Extraction, putting his expertise to good use for the stunts in Extraction 2. The director used the single-shot technique for a 21-minute action sequence in the highly-anticipated sequel. Hemsworth is a producer in the film along with Hargrave, Patrick Newall, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Eric Gitter, Peter Schwerin, and the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo. Some of the executive producers included Benjamin Grayson, Steven Scavelli, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The first Extraction drew inspiration from Ande Parks’ graphic novel Ciudad, which was adapted by Parks and the Russo brothers. Joe Russo returned for Extraction 2 as the sole writer. Extraction, which premiered in April 2020, was an instant success, becoming the most-watched original film debut in Netflix’s history. Within its first four weeks of release, the film was streamed in 99 million households, all but guaranteeing sequel treatment. Given the initial film’s status, and Extraction 2’s looking to follow the same success, it comes as no surprise that Netflix opted to greenlight a third installment in the franchise.
Extraction 2 garnered positive reviews from movie critics and is currently available to stream on Netflix.
